Honoring the Legacy of the Late Nikki Giovanni

Location: Johnson Hall Gallery, Jackson State University

As part of English and Modern Languages Week, we invites artists, writers, and creators to participate in Giovanni’s Room, an exhibit celebrating the life, legacy, and unparalleled contributions of the late Nikki Giovanni. Known for her powerful poetry, activism, and storytelling, Giovanni’s work continues to inspire and transform generations. This exhibit seeks to honor her voice and explore her impact on literature, culture, and identity. We encourage submissions that reflect on the themes of freedom, belonging, and life at the margins.

Submission Guidelines:

We welcome submissions in the following categories:

  • Visual Art: Paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, sculpture, or digital works inspired by Nikki Giovanni’s writings, themes, or life.
  • Written Works: Short stories, essays, or poetry that reflect Giovanni’s influence or engage with themes such as Black identity, love, resistance, or social justice.
  • Multimedia: Film, audio, or performance art proposals related to Giovanni’s legacy.

Eligibility:
Submissions are open to JSU students, faculty, and staff. 

How to Submit:

Please fill out our submissions form and include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • A short artist/writer bio (150 words max).
  • A description of your work (title, medium, dimensions, and a brief explanation of how it connects to Nikki Giovanni’s legacy).
  • Images or files of your work (JPEG or PDF for visual art, Word/PDF for written work, and links for multimedia).

Selection Process:

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of faculty and curators. Selected works will be featured in the exhibit at Johnson Hall Gallery.
